Today the Department of Mesmerizing Zoetropes can’t take its eyes off these awesome 3d-printed zoetrope sculptures, designed by artist, designer and Standford lecturer John Edmark. Each sculpture springs to life when spun under a strobe light or, as was done for these gifs, rotated in front of a camera shooting with a very short shutter speed.
“The placement of the appendages is determined by the same method nature uses in pinecones and sunflowers. The rotation speed is synchronized to the strobe so that one flash occurs every time the sculpture turns 137.5º—the golden angle. If you count the number of spirals on any of these sculptures you will find that they are always Fibonacci numbers.”
These three gifs are just a taste of the hypnotic quality of Edmark’s sculptures. Click here to watch a short video that provides a much closer look.
If you have access to a 3D printer, Edmark created an Instructable that’ll show you how to make your own Blooming Zoetrope Sculpture.

You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect - you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break - her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there.
